The University’s major ceremonial occasion is the Conferment of Doctoral Degrees, which takes place annually during the latter part of October. This is when doctor’s degrees are ceremonially conferred on those who have completed their doctoral studies. New honorary doctors also receive their insignia at the conferment ceremony.
Another important ceremony is the Inauguration of New Professors in April. As the name suggests, this is when the Vice-Chancellor inaugurates or welcomes the new professors that have arrived during the past year.
Both of these ceremonies represent tradition and renewal. They have been taking place for a long time and they thus create continuity and fellowship within the University of Gothenburg. However, the ceremonies are not just retrospective. At the same time they demonstrate the renewal of knowledge that both new doctors and new professors represent. The events also display the importance that the University attaches to its new doctors and professors.
As a new Vice-Chancellor has been appointed by the Government, a ceremonial inauguration of the Vice-Chancellor will also be held.
Other ceremonies at the University of Gothenburg are the presentation of the award for Zealous and Devoted Service to the State, the Retirement Ceremony and the Félix Neubergh Lecture.
